CAN GOD? (1934)

This was J. Edwin Orr's first book, about his travels by faith through the United Kingdom to speak to God's people about revival. It's a genuinely remarkable book, especially considering that Orr was in his young twenties when he wrote it. It is filled with marvelous answers to prayer and God's guiding and blessing hand throughout his travels.

PROVE ME NOW! (1935)

Published in 1935, this second book by J. Edwin Orr continues the story started in Can God --? (1934). In Can God --? Edwin Orr showed how as he simply trusted God and lived by faith, God would supply his every need. Some doubters said this could happen as he traveled in Christian Great Britain, but it would be a different story if he ventured outside of Christian Europe. To prove this wrong, Orr insisted on a by-faith journey through Europe to atheist Russia, still spreading his message of hope, prayer, and revival with whomever God opened the door for him to share with.

In Prove Me Now!, Edwin Orr described his journeys through Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and then on into Russia. He returned back towards Britain by going through the Baltic States, Poland, Germany, and the Low Countries. God blessed the work wonderfully and provided every need.

THE PROMISE IS TO YOU (1935)

This is the third of Orr's series of "travel books." It's the remarkable story of how he toured and ministered all the way to the Holy Land and back, trusting God to both provide his needs and give him ministry opportunities. In 1935 air travel was still new and out of reach for most travelers, but God wonderfully supplied the first leg of Edwin Orr's journey on an airplane ("aeroplane") - he flew from England to France with five shillings in his pocket, and he saw God supply all his needs. That's why there is an airplane on the cover of this book.

TIMES OF REFRESHING (1936)

"Times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord." (Acts 3:19)

First published in January 1936 by Marshall, Morgan, & Scott - Hardcover, 128 pages

This is the fourth in Edwin Orr's seven "travel books," detailing his trip through Canada in 1935. This was a significant and remarkable trip for Orr. His time and ministry at the famous People's Church in Toronto, under Pastor Oswald J. Smith, was an important landmark in his ministry. Before that time Orr had preached the message of revival to God's people with blessing and effectiveness, but starting in Toronto the fruit was far more evident.

The Second Evangelical Awakening in Britain (1949)

First published in January 1949 by Marshall, Morgan, & Scott - Hardcover, 302 pages

This book reflects a great landmark in the life and ministry of J. Edwin Orr. Most of his previous books - 13 in all - were "travel" books, wonderfully describing his itinerant ministry all around the world. The exceptions among these first 13 were "The Church Must First Repent" (a collection of messages and thoughts on the topic of revival) and "Always Abounding" (a biography of Oswald J. Smith, pastor of the People's Church of Toronto). None of the first 13 were particularly scholarly, but that changed with the publication of The Second Evangelical Awakening in Britain. This book is essentially Orr's Oxford Doctoral Thesis, and was widely awarded and recognized as a tremendous work of both scholarship and heart. This work was later abridged into The Second Evangelical Awakening, published in 1955.

This is one of Orr's great classics, written on the deeper spiritual life and full commitment to God. This is probably one of Orr's best books on how revival comes, both in the individual and in congregations.

This is a fascinating book, documenting a wonderful work of God among actors and actresses in the 1950's. In this work, Orr wanted to both explain what God did and defend it among critics. Orr was a humble, unassuming man who had an unusual effectiveness with these stars of stage, screen, and radio.

"Some men read history, some write it, and others make it. So far as the history of religious revivals is concerned, J. Edwin Orr belongs to all three categories."

Evangelical Awakenings in Africa (1975)

Published in 1975 by Bethany Fellowship - Third of the Five-Part "Evangelical Awakenings" series
Softcover, 245 pages. ISBN: 0-87123-128-X

From the back cover . . .

The Church in Europe, threatened as never before by the brazen atheism of Voltaire and the French Revolution, fell to its knees and pleaded for revival. In 1791 God replied from heaven with what became known as the Second General Awakening. The circle of its power widened until, a few years later, its impact was felt in South Africa. Beginning with these exciting early times Orr recounts the stories of the waves of blessing which periodically rolled across black Africa. The book culminates with a consideration of the modern changes on that vast continent and some practical conclusions about the obstacles and instruments God has used in spreading the Gospel in that part of his great vineyard.

EVANGELICAL AWAKENINGS IN AFRICA is the third of five volumes by Mr. Orr which comprise a "New Awakening Series" now being released. Others in the series include, Evangelical Awakenings In Southern Asia, Evangelical Awakenings In Eastern Asia, Evangelical Awakenings In Greater Oceania, and Evangelical Awakenings In Latin America. Together they make up a very remarkable source of valuable information concerning the stirrings of the Holy Spirit throughout much of the world.

Published in 1975 by Bethany Fellowship - Second of the Five-Part "Evangelical Awakenings" series

From the back cover . . .

There is no doubt that the general spiritual awakening of the 1790's and 1800's was the prime factor in the extraordinary burst of missionary enthusiasm and social service which began in Britain, Europe and in North America. In the wake of this spiritual outburst a number of missionary organizations came into being. They sent their emissaries to many parts of the earth. Southern Asia was one of those areas which first felt the impact. In this book Dr. Orr traces the major movements of the Spirit which occurred through the years which followed the first thrust into that great sub-continent. With his customary sensitivity and warmth, combined with his vast knowledge of missionary history, the author touches on all the great stirrings of God which so profoundly affected India and the areas immediately around it. He culminates this volume with a discussion of the evangelization of Southern Asia.

EVANGELICAL AWAKENINGS IN SOUTHERN ASIA is the second of five volumes by Mr. Orr which comprise "A New Awakening Series" presently being released at monthly intervals. Others in the series include, Evangelical Awakenings in Eastern Asia, Evangelical Awakenings in Africa, Evangelical Awakenings in Greater Oceania, and Evangelical Awakenings in Latin America. Beginning with the great pioneer efforts of the nineteenth century, Mr. Orr relates the spiritual and social factors which met in the production of significant revivals from the Fifth General Awakening, down through the years until after the closing of China by the cruel hand of Communism. With sensitivity and warmth, combined with a penchant for accuracy, the author touches on all the great stirrings of the Spirit that touched this teeming area of the world. Outbreaks of blessings throughout China, quickening in Korea, and the Lord's evident hand in Japan and Taiwan all get proper attention. At a point in history, when much of eastern Asia is engulfed in the Red tide, it is particularly inspiring to be reminded of the power which God has been able to generate in the name of His Son.

EVANGELICAL AWAKENINGS IN EASTERN ASIA is the first of five volumes by Mr. Orr which comprise a "New Awakening Series" soon to be released. Others in the series include. Evangelical Awakenings in the South Seas (1976)

Published in 1976 by Bethany Fellowship - Fourth of Five-Part "Evangelical Awakenings" series
Softcover, 245 pages. ISBN: 0-87123-129-8

From the back cover . . .

The major marks of evangelical awakenings are always some repetition of the phenomena of the Acts of the Apostles, followed by the revitalizing of nominal Christians and by bringing outsiders into vital touch with the divine dynamic- the Spirit of God. These same marks were abundantly evident in the South Seas. The exciting story began in 1796 when the first band of thirty intrepid missionaries set sail for the South Pacific. In time the message spread from Tahiti, their first stopping place, to the Indies. . . and far beyond. The third general awakening broke out and the tidal wave of blessing rolled out to the islands. Then followed the fourth and fifth awakenings as the Holy Spirit moved over the waters and across the generations - until the present marvelous stirring in Indonesia! Orr's survey is a series of heart-warming adventures and unbelievable cruelties. Boiling water was poured upon believers. Two were "chopped as fine as mincemeat and burned to ashes." Here is a moving chronicle of God in action, often against fanatical opposition, revolutionizing raw heathen.

EVANGELICAL AWAKENINGS IN THE SOUTH SEAS is the fourth of five volumes comprising the "New Awakening Series" now being released. Evangelical Awakenings in Latin America (1978)

Published in 1978 by Bethany Fellowship - Last of the Five-Part "Evangelical Awakenings" series
Softcover, 216 pages. ISBN: 0-87123-130-1

From the back cover . . .

The indications are that there are now far more people surrendering to Christ in Latin America than in North America. This startling fact does not stand alone. It is the culmination of a long history of evangelical effort. The progress of the Gospel "south of the border" is an exciting story, punctuated by dramatic outbursts of divine activity. Beginning with Cortez and Pizarro nominal Christianity bludgeoned its way into the lives of the people. Whatever light may have come to their darkened minds was largely obscured by the cruelty of those who brought it; True evangelical penetration did not begin until the First and Second Awakenings of the 18th century. The Moravians were in the vanguard of these initial labors. In the nineteenth century James Thomson, an English Protestant, went to South America as a teacher and was welcomed by several Catholic nations. While there he successfully promoted Scripture distribution. Midway through that century the Anglican Evangelicals embarked upon some heroic invasions of the continent. So profound was the effect of one of them that Charles Darwin himself became a life-long financial supporter of the task. And so the narrative goes-courageous sorties against murderous opposition - outbursts of revival - consolidation - and fresh renewals. Then the wave of the Fifth Evangelical Awakening spread across the world at the opening of the present century. It reached Latin America and left its profound effect upon Brazil and Chile. Dr. Orr traces the entire grand series of events right up to the modern era. It is a warm, readable chronicle of the Holy Spirit's tireless efforts to bring a continent to the feet of the Son!

EVANGELICAL AWAKENINGS IN LATIN AMERICA is the last of five volumes comprising the "New Awakening Series." Others in the series include Evangelical Awakenings in the South Seas, Evangelical Awakenings in Southern Asia, Evangelical Awakenings in Eastern Asia, and Evangelical Awakenings in Africa.
