First published in January 1949 by Marshall, Morgan, & Scott - Hardcover, 302 pages
This book reflects a great landmark in the life and ministry of J. Edwin Orr. Most of his previous books - 13 in all - were "travel" books, wonderfully describing his itinerant ministry all around the world. The exceptions among these first 13 were "The Church Must First Repent" (a collection of messages and thoughts on the topic of revival) and "Always Abounding" (a biography of Oswald J. Smith, pastor of the People's Church of Toronto). None of the first 13 were particularly scholarly, but that changed with the publication of The Second Evangelical Awakening in Britain. This book is essentially Orr's Oxford Doctoral Thesis, and was widely awarded and recognized as a tremendous work of both scholarship and heart. This work was later abridged into The Second Evangelical Awakening, published in 1955.
